Why an EV charger is assessed as part of the whole property
An EV charger is a substantial electrical load, so the installation cannot be judged by looking at the proposed mounting point alone. The existing consumer unit (the main electrical box), incoming electricity supply and how the system is connected to earth, cable route and the way electricity is already used at the property all matter.
That is why two houses on the same street can need different installation approaches. A newer detached home with a nearby garage may have a straightforward route and suitable spare capacity. An older terrace in Crawley with parking at the front, a full consumer unit and a long external cable run may need more planning before the charger can be connected safely.

The consumer unit is only one part of the answer
Homeowners often ask whether there is simply enough space in the consumer unit. Space is important, but it does not by itself confirm that the installation is suitable.
We need to establish whether the existing board can accommodate the required safety devices and whether its condition and configuration are appropriate for a new separate circuit. Older consumer units may have limited capacity, outdated arrangements or no practical space for the equipment needed by the charger. In some properties, electrical repair work may be necessary before the EV circuit can be installed.
The position of the consumer unit also affects the installation. If it is close to the parking space, the cable route may be contained and easier to protect. If it is at the rear of a long or awkward property, the route may pass through loft spaces, outbuildings or external areas. Each section has to be considered for protection from knocks and damage, exposure to the weather and future access.
Do not remove covers or attempt to inspect the board yourself. You can tell us the approximate age of the installation and point out any known electrical issues, but testing and assessment need to be carried out by a qualified electrician.
The incoming supply may limit the charger arrangement
The electricity supply to the property has a maximum capacity. That capacity is shared by the whole installation, including cooking equipment, electric heating, immersion heaters, heat pumps and other high-demand appliances.
A charger may be technically compatible with the house but still require the overall demand to be managed carefully. The important question is not only what the charger can deliver. It is whether the property can support charging while other significant loads are operating without creating an unsafe or unreliable condition.
Where available capacity is limited, the answer may involve a suitable charging arrangement with load management rather than immediately replacing major parts of the electrical installation. A system that manages the electrical load can adjust the charger’s demand in relation to the rest of the property, but it must be correctly selected, installed and commissioned for the specific supply and usage pattern.
A site survey helps distinguish between a genuine supply limitation, a consumer unit issue and a cable-routing problem. Those are different issues and should not be treated as interchangeable upgrades.
Property layout changes the installation considerably
The distance between your parking space and the consumer unit is one of the clearest practical differences between properties. A charger on an attached garage can have a very different installation route from one serving a driveway across the front of the house.
We consider where the cable will run, what surfaces it crosses and how it can be protected. Brickwork, rendered walls, paving, gravel areas, detached garages and shared access routes each create different requirements. A neat installation is not simply a matter of hiding the cable. It must remain protected, accessible for inspection and positioned so that normal use of the drive or garage does not damage it.
Older buildings can add further complications. Hidden wiring, previous alterations and limited routes through solid walls may affect where the circuit can be installed. Listed or character properties may also have restrictions on visible cablework, although any permissions required are a property matter that should be checked before work begins.
Flats and properties with communal parking need a separate assessment. The parking bay, how the electricity meter and supply are set up, cable route and permission to work on shared areas may all affect the design. A charger cannot necessarily be connected to a private flat supply simply because the parking space is nearby.
What to prepare before the survey
You can make the assessment more useful by noting the position of your consumer unit, the usual parking location and any equipment that places a high demand on the electrical system. Tell us if the property has solar panels, battery storage, electric heating or a detached garage, as these details can influence how the charger is integrated into the installation.
It also helps to explain how you expect to use the charger. Regular overnight charging at home creates different design considerations from occasional charging for more than one vehicle. The intended use does not replace the electrical assessment, but it helps us recommend an arrangement that suits the property rather than installing equipment in isolation.
The right answer depends on evidence from your home
Some installations need changes to the consumer unit, a dedicated circuit, additional protection or a different approach to managing demand. Others may be suitable with careful routing and the correct charging equipment. There is no responsible way to confirm which applies from a photograph of the driveway or a quick check of the socket location.
